Long Weekend Layers

long weekend layers

Some people put up their Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving, but I was in New Jersey, so the closest I came was breaking out the plaid. Actually, I’m lying. I started wearing the plaid a few weeks ago. I can’t help it — I wear Hawaiian print in the summer, plaid in the winter, and stripes and leopard print all year round.

There was a time in my life that I used to leave the house in one shirt. And I’m not sure what prompted me to start layering two and three of them on top of each other every day — maybe I was just dying to do three times as much laundry. But I must admit that creatively mixing and matching my wardrobe makes my outfits a feel little more original. Although, many of these outfits were inspired by last winter’s Chicago trip, so maybe not that original.

Anyway, in case you’re wondering, plans for this week include washing all these clothes, putting up my Christmas tree, and working a full 40 hours (which I haven’t done since September). =)

30 for 30 Flashback

By fall, fashion statements, outfits, ruling at life, style, you might learn something 2 Comments

Right around two years ago today, I was in the in the middle of Kendi’s 30 for 30 challenge. Maybe you remember the rules? Take 30 pieces from your closet (including shoes, but not including outerwear and accessories) and remix them into 30 different outfits over 30 days. I had lots of fun doing this, and as it turned out, I was able to turn 30 pieces into not just 30, but 50 outfits. Whenever I feel the urge to shop too much or buy something I don’t absolutely love, I try to keep in mind the lessons I learned about my closet over the course of this challenge and that since I still own most of these pieces, I have plenty to wear.

One Last Beach Day

It was bright, sunny and 82 degrees this afternoon, so J and I rode our bikes to the beach. I wasn’t expecting the water to be warm enough for swimming, but it was perfect. Not to be deterred by lack of a swimsuit and a towel, I waded out into the salty Atlantic in my dress. I thought it was a novel idea at first — the kind of thing you only see in movies or magazine photo shoots. But after awhile, I realized it was the rare sort of day where you find lots of people in the ocean with their clothes on. It was as if we all flocked to the beach a few hours ahead of the cold front, expecting the water to be freezing. The realization we were wrong, coupled with the fact that the temperature is going to take a 20-degree tumble overnight, made taking one last dip somewhat irresistible…dresses, shorts, jeans or otherwise.

I’ll still be holding out for a few more warm days, but if today truly was the last beach day of 2012, I’m glad I managed to spend an hour walking along the water’s edge enjoying it. =)

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to autumn taking the reins, so I can wear boots and plaid flannel, cook chili with J, and not have to worry about mosquitoes outside. =)

J.Crew Fall 2012 Love

By fall, shopping, style No Comments

JCrew Fall 2012 Wishlist

Hypothetically, if someone were to unleash me in J.Crew with unlimited funds this season, these are the six items I’d purchase. I say “hypothetically” for two reasons: (1) because once I try on those paisley-looking pants, I’m probably going to realize they won’t work out on my 5’1″ frame, and (2) because that black dress is already sold out. =)

1. Collection Golden Paisley Pant, $325
2. Booker Boots, $298
3. Collection Houndstooth Popover, $525 (This thing must be made from the wool of sheep royalty.)
4. Collection Cafe Capri in Jade Jacquard, $198
5. Etta Cap Toe Leather Pumps, $248
6. Flared Ponte Dress, $138 (sold out)

Fashion’s Night Out

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Fashion’s Night Out at Peninsula Town Center as a photographer. It was so much fun mingling and snapping pictures of Hampton Roads’ local fashionistas looking their best. I loved participating in a local event celebrating fashion in conjunction with NYFW, and Peninsula Town Center went all out. They brought in celebrity stylist Stephen “Cojo” Cojocaru, gave away special gifts and hundreds of goodie bags, and rolled out the red carpet at shops throughout the center to offer special deals and sales to shoppers. They also hosted a fabulous VIP pre-party at Cinebistro, where Cojo revealed the new look of PTC’s FNO makeover winner, Christina Morales. She looked drop-dead gorgeous in a sparkly neutral dress, strappy heels, and a glamorous new hairstyle.

As partygoers hung on every word of Cojo’s style advice, I thought nothing of my own outfit, since I was flitting around behind the camera taking pictures of as many people as I could. It was right around the time he started warning against over-highlighting one’s locks and delighting in the fact that women look so put-together in heels that I started to think, “Uh oh…maybe I’m underdressed.” =)

Luckily, I was wrong. I got plenty of compliments on my layered rainy-day photographer look (which featured a sleeveless trench, red Hunter boots and my trusty Ona bag). I think the most flattering one came from Hillary Puckett, a local contributor to College Fashionista, when she asked if she could take a picture of my outfit! Thanks, Hillary! =)

Special thanks and congratulations to my friend Suzanne, who invited me up to take pictures and played a huge role in planning Fashion’s Night Out at Pensinsula Town Center.

If you were in attendance and would like to see the rest of my photos, you can find them here. =)
