Constant with a K

The other night I saw Jack’s Mannequin at the Norva. It made me think of my time in Las Vegas – sharing a bunk bed with my 10-year-old cousin, laying on the floor, idly tapping out some LJ entries to the tune of Andrew McMahon’s irresistible voice (still Something Corporate back then) while I casually sipped glass of wine. The window would be open, and the sounds of the little cousins chattering would echo through the house. It was funny, at first I hated how loud that house was, but when I left, I couldn’t stand the sound of silence for quite a few months. My idea of quiet became the muffled sounds of laughter and video games drifting up the stairs while the door was cracked and the cat kept trying to sneak in. The occasional witty comment I overheard was enough to keep me inspired and keep me writing whatever LJ work of art I was creating at the time. And Fabio the Hamster. He could keep me going all night long.

You know I used to keep a mini notebook in my purse? I used to write down interesting quotes and song lyrics and funny ideas all day long and then blog about them later. I concentrated so hard to writing these hysterically satirical posts that I usually forgot I was supposed to be figuring out what to do with my life. Those were the LJ’s golden days. I remember now.

You know what else I remember now? My favorite lyrics to "Konstantine" by Something Corporate.

"I had these dreams in them I learned to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rock star."

Before MySpace; before Facebook; before my vapid second blog about materialistic bullshit that requires zero creativity, the LJ was my constant source of inspiration. Sure, it made you laugh, but best of all? It made me laugh. Constantly.

There was no writer’s block, and there was no wasting all my silly thoughts in a one-sentence status update. Whatever happened to composing an entire thought? An entire anecdote? An entire story?

Maybe it’s because I spend my days at work writing proposals. It’s not the most creative writing, but it’s a lot of writing. Maybe I just get it all out of my system at work, and I don’t feel like writing for fun anymore.

Speaking of writing proposals at work – today a person who was supposed to be feeding me some narrative for a program management plan sent me some text. As I read the first few sentences, I grew suspicious of the fact that it sounded extremely too general and nothing like the rest of his writing. Needless to say, I Googled "program management" and soon came to the realization that he copied the entire program mangement plan from freaking Wikipedia.

Anyway, maybe someday Something Corporate will get back together. And maybe someday, I’ll be inspired to bang out some hysterically satirical posts again. Maybe soon.

Down, Down, Down to Mephisto’s Cafe

If you’ve been keeping up with me for the past four years, you might remember when I first discovered the brilliance that is Streetlight Manifesto. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to see them in concert two or three times.

Anyway, Tomas Kalnoky is my hero. He’s an awesome writer.

Streetlight Manifesto finally released a new album – Somewhere in the Between – this past November. And, apparently, they’ve created their first official video! Check it out!

Countdown to Halloween

There’s only one week left until my current second favorite holiday. I wore my black see-through spiderweb shirt to work to celebrate. (Don’t worry, I wore it under a blazer over a green cami with a conservative pleated skirt and my Diesel boots – it was only a little inappropriate, but not too bad.)

My costume finally arrived via FedEx this morning, and I used my lunch break to pick up some shoes to wear with it at Hot Topic. I was going to get red patent leather platforms, but they were too painful to walk in, so I opted for some knee-high, white patent leather boots…that lace up the back with a ribbon. What? They were on sale. I’m pretty sure my entire office probably thinks I’m moonlighting at Ocean’s Cabaret by now. Oh well.

I also picked up the new My Chemical Romance CD while I was at Hot Topic – it was on sale for $9.99. If you don’t know The Black Parade was released today, you obviously haven’t logged in to MySpace yet this afternoon. Get with the program. Go to Hot Topic. Get it. It’s awesome.

The Aerosmith concert rocked. Check out Laurie’s blog for the pics. Be sure to notice Steven Tyler in a chiffon leopard-print shirt paired with red leather pants. Sweetness.

Snap out of it!

I feel so old and boring. I went on a business trip to Kansas City this week for the TranSystems marketing conference, and now I’m exhausted. Tom asked me to go out for a few drinks last night, but I took a bath and started reading The Blind Assassin instead. I can’t even remember the last time I went out on a Thursday. Hell, I can’t even remember the last time I went out on a weekend.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m bored or anything, and I’ve been very productive. It’s just that I find myself doing more old-people activities than partying – like cooking, decorating and going to Homearama by myself (and enjoying it). Homearama is an event in Hampton Roads put on by the Tidewater Builders Association where you tour a bunch of super-expensive, custom-built, decorated homes. It was very overwhelming.

Speaking of Homearama, I saw the most amazing zebra-print barstools while I was touring the houses in Suffolk on Sunday. They’re actually barstool-height, upholstered chairs. I asked the interior decorator of House #14 where she found them and stopped to purchase two on my way home. They’re so money. They look absolutely awesome in my place. Owning a condo involves a lot of shopping.

Shopping, shopping, shopping. I really need to cut back on the shopping. I have recently bought a few pairs of gorgeous shoes and a bunch of cute dresses and other party clothes, but since I’m being boring and I never go out…

I really need to spend less money on clothes and furniture and more on beer and rock concerts.

Because of this, I am making a pact to have an exciting weekend. I’m going to put forth some effort and find something to do tonight, and tomorrow night is the Aerosmith concert – so half my work is done. Perhaps I’ll even have some people over to tailgate on my new barstools before the show, since the Amphitheater is a bunch of dumb bitches that don’t let you drink in the parking lot.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, I will be wearing my Aerosmith thong to the concert tomorrow night.

(P.S. I have to tag this entry with “hot lead singers of bands” based solely on the fact that any person who remains a rockstar for as long as Steven Tyler has deserves to be classified as “hot” no matter how old he is.)
