J isn’t much of a blogger, but he was nice enough to contribute post #9. Maybe he had to because he’s my boyfriend? Nah, I think he wrote it because he likes me. Kind of like how when I went through a style blogging phase, he took most of my photos. And how when I went through an eBay selling phase, he shipped most of my packages. And how when I gave up gluten, he stopped inviting me over for dinner because he likes to eat pizza and tortellini. =) Nah, I’m just kidding. He takes me out for Thai and Mexican. All. The. Time. And I know you guys all want to know when we’re going to get married, but seriously? Mind your own business. All you need to know is that we share a Costco membership and a puggle right now. We’ll take care of the rest later. =)

Hi! My name’s John. I’ve never written a blog post before, so please excuse everything forthcoming in this post, as I don’t really know what I’m doing. The Coastal Chicster has asked me to write a guest post to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the best blog around. She’s amazing, so I told her I’d write something. I didn’t promise it would be good, but I committed to make an attempt. Here goes.

First off, I LOVE The Coastal Chicster.  I know her my as beautiful and brilliant girlfriend Lisa. I’ve been fortunate enough to know Lisa since 2008, and I’ve obviously followed (and been mentioned) in her writing over the years.

Lisa asked me to pick a favorite post. Wow, that’s hard. She and I have had a lot of great times / trips etc. that she has written about.  I am partial to this one.  That trip was a blast, and she got a ton of great photos that she posted.  I also really like this post. It chronicles our fantastic trip to Chicago to see her brother Stephen graduate Navy Boot Camp.

That being said, my favorite post on this blog hits closer to home.

Ok, so I’m a lucky guy. I’ve got a phenomenal girlfriend, great family, friends and career. Know what else? Lisa and I have a dog. He’s pretty cool. His name is Diesel and this is my favorite post (at the moment) that Lisa has written since I’ve known her. Lisa and I had a great time going to pick him out. We had to defeat smoke and bad directions. There seemed to be peril at every turn. Eventually we got to pick out the dog genius now known as Diesel. This post makes me smile whenever I read it. Lisa was very sweet, and sincere both in the writing of the post and in dealing with the puppy. She wasn’t really a dog person, but I believe she is now.

I’m not sure I’m as smart as Lisa or Diesel, but I’m lucky to have them both in my life. This post resonates with me, as it reflects a great experience that is still ongoing. I hope Lisa continues to write from the heart, as I will be reading.

10 Years, 10 Friends, 10 Days: The Co-Worker

My favorite co-worker Michelle, who I’ve known since June 17, 2009 — the day I started working at my current company. Since that day, we’ve each changed jobs, moved around the building, and been focused on lots of different projects, but she’s still my lunch buddy and always up for an afternoon walk to Starbucks where we catch up on work and life. From creating ridiculous forms to watching operas in the movie theater, we always find a way to make everything fun(ny). Also, I’m pretty sure she likes my cats more than I do.

There are few people in the world that truly impress me on every level; Lisa is one of those few. When I heard of her idea to allow guest bloggers to talk about their favorite posts through the years, I was pretty excited. Partly because I was crossing my fingers that I would be one of the chosen ones and also because over the years that I have known Lisa, I feel like I’ve participated in some of the posts when I take the photos of her outfits during our longer-than-average lunch breaks. Through the years that I have known Lisa, she’s been my style-sensei, my good-music-guru, my make-up-maven, and my all-around friend. Here are my notes from my favorite posts from the last ten years!

The Road Less Traveled – 7/22/13
It’s the post that sums up what I feel when I read what Lisa writes. It’s damn-near poetic. Her words are hypnotic, you can’t stop reading. She has a way of bringing you to the exact place where she is with her hyper-accurate descriptions and evocations of feeling. It was like being there.

12 Things I Secretly Love About Being Single (Legally) at 31 – 12/12/12
This one was hysterical. Again, her words will wrap you up in their meaning, and it’s the kind of reading that pulls you into her view. I especially love number 6 about having babies!

30 for 30 Flashback – 11/16/12
Who would have thought that someone could take ONLY 30 pieces from your closet and wear them and ONLY them for 30 days AND not repeat any combinations! I never would have thought that it would even be possible, but this is the proof. These kinds of posts that Lisa created always make me think about the possibilities that I have in my own closet. Under her tutelage, I have become a little more open to trying new ideas with clothes and I have officially thrown out my standard black Mary Janes!

Fisheye – 7/3/12
The photographs on this post are absolutely beautiful! She has an eye for finding the right light, the right view, and just the right end product!

The Menagerie – 11/14/11
I’ll end with this. I think over the past few years, I’ve grown to nearly love these two cats. Mele and Kona are the closest thing to “liking someone else’s kids” that I can get. As for Diesel, I’ve only met him a few times.

But he’s pretty cute. She meant to add that Diesel is ridiculously, incredibly, undeniably the cutest puppy ever.

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t spent much time with Diesel. I miss his cute little face! J and I took him to First Landing State Park a few weeks ago, where we coerced him into the water with a stick. He was much more interested in digging holes than swimming, but Diesel can’t resist a good stick. He had no choice but to jump in after it over and over again. =)

This week is another crazy one because I’ve got a proposal due before we leave for Vegas on Friday, but I’m determined to squeeze in some quality puppy time before I leave.

Diesel 2011.10.25

Diesel and I went for our first real run today! I haven’t been running in forever, and I’ve been looking forward to taking him out with me ever since we decided to get him. His little legs are finally long enough, and it turns out we run at a pretty good pace for each other. I’m pretty excited about it. =)

I’ve had the house to myself all week because my roommate is out in the field, and I’ve been taking advantage of my quality alone time by baking, blogging, and listening to classical music.

Speaking of classical music, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra is playing at Chrysler Hall on Saturday night, and I really want to go. The cheapest tickets are $14.75, and they’re playing two pieces in honor of Franz Liszt’s 200th birthday. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse for my lack of motivation to dress up for Halloween. Despite the fact that I’ve been burning a pumpkin candle for weeks, I just can’t find it in me to go all out this year.

Although, I have been occasionally switching from “Light Classical” to “Holiday Favorites” on my TV — the Halloween music is hilarious.

I was going to dress Diesel up, but not as a mermaid or a shark or anything like that. I just wanted to get a little barrel and strap it to his collar, so he could be a Saint Bernard.

I probably won’t do that either. =)
