Holidays @ the Office

2013 ADS Holiday Video from ADS Tactical on Vimeo.

I never thought I’d say this, but even though I’m on vacation this week, I kind of miss work a little. I guess work has its ups and downs just like everything else. A year ago, the last thing I wanted to cross my mind on vacation was work, but lately we’ve been making lots of progress, accomplishing lots of cool things, and been generally having a decent time doing it. When I get back to the office on January 3rd, we kick off a major new project, and I can’t wait to get started. In the meantime, I’ve been doing a few things here and there, answering e-mails, jotting down ideas, reading up on some new IT stuff, and secretly watching this video over and over again because it’s hilarious.

Unfortunately, I was not quite festive enough to participate in the making of this video. My brilliant co-worker Jordan directed, filmed and edited the whole thing, and I love it so much, I figured I may as well share it. Enjoy. =)

Happy holidays!

10 Years, 10 Friends, 10 Days: The Co-Worker

By at the office, diesel the puggle, employment, friends, guest posts, kona the kitty, links, mele the kitty, milestones, what have you been doing for the last 10 years? 2 Comments

My favorite co-worker Michelle, who I’ve known since June 17, 2009 — the day I started working at my current company. Since that day, we’ve each changed jobs, moved around the building, and been focused on lots of different projects, but she’s still my lunch buddy and always up for an afternoon walk to Starbucks where we catch up on work and life. From creating ridiculous forms to watching operas in the movie theater, we always find a way to make everything fun(ny). Also, I’m pretty sure she likes my cats more than I do.

There are few people in the world that truly impress me on every level; Lisa is one of those few. When I heard of her idea to allow guest bloggers to talk about their favorite posts through the years, I was pretty excited. Partly because I was crossing my fingers that I would be one of the chosen ones and also because over the years that I have known Lisa, I feel like I’ve participated in some of the posts when I take the photos of her outfits during our longer-than-average lunch breaks. Through the years that I have known Lisa, she’s been my style-sensei, my good-music-guru, my make-up-maven, and my all-around friend. Here are my notes from my favorite posts from the last ten years!

The Road Less Traveled – 7/22/13
It’s the post that sums up what I feel when I read what Lisa writes. It’s damn-near poetic. Her words are hypnotic, you can’t stop reading. She has a way of bringing you to the exact place where she is with her hyper-accurate descriptions and evocations of feeling. It was like being there.

12 Things I Secretly Love About Being Single (Legally) at 31 – 12/12/12
This one was hysterical. Again, her words will wrap you up in their meaning, and it’s the kind of reading that pulls you into her view. I especially love number 6 about having babies!

30 for 30 Flashback – 11/16/12
Who would have thought that someone could take ONLY 30 pieces from your closet and wear them and ONLY them for 30 days AND not repeat any combinations! I never would have thought that it would even be possible, but this is the proof. These kinds of posts that Lisa created always make me think about the possibilities that I have in my own closet. Under her tutelage, I have become a little more open to trying new ideas with clothes and I have officially thrown out my standard black Mary Janes!

Fisheye – 7/3/12
The photographs on this post are absolutely beautiful! She has an eye for finding the right light, the right view, and just the right end product!

The Menagerie – 11/14/11
I’ll end with this. I think over the past few years, I’ve grown to nearly love these two cats. Mele and Kona are the closest thing to “liking someone else’s kids” that I can get. As for Diesel, I’ve only met him a few times.

But he’s pretty cute. She meant to add that Diesel is ridiculously, incredibly, undeniably the cutest puppy ever.

Happy Halloween

I didn’t dress up for Halloween this year, but I did facilitate a costume contest at work by setting up an intranet page where people could vote online, which is more up my alley these days than dressing up anyway. (Halloween was more exciting in my 20s.) My lack of celebration today consisted of not wearing black and orange, not switching on the battery-operated fake candles in my pirate-themed craft pumpkins I carved in 2009, not handing out any candy since no one goes trick-or-treating at any of the places I have ever lived since moving to Virginia Beach, and increasing my pumpkin production to 51.6 per second in Cookie Clickers

I also managed to squeeze in getting my first ever flu shot (you know I hate shots), and I found out my parents are ditching me for Christmas to go to my brother’s ship’s homecoming in Florida. Then I went horseback riding in my work clothes because I was too lazy to change.

I stopped by Target on my way home to pick up some feline supplies because J is taking care of the kitties while I go to a wedding in Pennsylvania this weekend. Do you know how many people go to Target on Halloween? About six. Do you know what goes on at Target on Halloween? They put out holiday items. That seems premature to me, but whatever. I guess that’s why I don’t run a Target for a living.

Christmas Wrapping” is already stuck in my head, so bring on the rest of the holidays. I’m ready.

P.S. I should be packing for my trip to PA, but since I’m determined to celebrate Halloween in some way, I am watching Vampire Diaries on my DVR. I probably shouldn’t admit that on the internet. Oops.

An Autumn State of Mind

autumn
No matter how many years go by that I don’t have to go back to school (and I think it’s been 10 now), autumn still feels a little bit like the start of a new year. As those carefree summer days quickly give way to the hustle and bustle of September at the office, I’m inspired to get organized, learn some new things, and refocus on some of my work-related goals. I spent the weekend trying to snap myself out of a little funk I’ve been in because this year’s beach days are dwindling down. I decorated my living room with sparkly leaves, neatly folded all my sweaters, and then I stumbled upon the perfect object for fall. Not a pair of boots or a brand new scarf, but a pretty little chevron notebook (for $3 @ TJMaxx), whose impeccably bound blank pages are destined to become my new catch-all for to-do lists, meeting notes, and project plans at work.

“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” That’s the Roosevelt quote I scrawled on the first page before jotting down my page-long list of tasks this morning. I toted my little book to the first of a newly scheduled daily meeting for my department, and then I started to cross things off one by one as the day wore on. Before I knew it, it was 9:30 p.m., and I’m not saying it was the notebook, but I think I may have accomplished the work of five people today. And it was all important. And that felt good.

I’m gonna miss my warm, sunny beach days more than anything, but I think I can get on board with this fall thing after all.

This & That: Links I’m Loving This Week

This & That Links 1

1. Is the warm weather finally here to stay? I hope so because Samantha’s glamorous resort-inspired look on her blog Could I Have That? is making me crave summer more than ever.

2. J.Crew’s new tropical print popover means people might think twice before poking fun at my Hawaiian shirt collection this year. (Also, these board shorts are almost identical the pair I wore the day I moved into my dorm room freshman year of college…shoulda saved those, too.)

3. One of my new year’s resolutions was to find ways to connect with other bloggers, so when I discovered the Virginia Bloggers community the other day, becoming a member was a no brainer. Looking forward to finding ways to network with this group.

4. I used one of these strawberry stem removers at my parents’ house last week. Brilliant. About to order one for myself as soon as I publish this post.

5. After being out of the office for a full nine days, I was relying on my noise-cancelling headphones to help me hunker down and get caught up at work this week. Unfortunately, they’re getting on in years and starting to fail me. Time for a new pair?

6. Emily’s new beachy waves tutorial was the first thing I saw when I woke up Tuesday morning, so I had to give it a try. I polished mine off with a little Bumble & bumble Surf Spray, and my wavy ‘do saw me all the way through to Wednesday night.

7. This collection of photos about an inseparable pair of twins who lead an identical life made me smile.

8. I’m the type of person who is always wondering, “What’s next? What’s next?” I often have to remind myself to slow down and enjoy where I’m at right now, so I’m in total agreement with these sentiments from Cara of The Champagne Diet: “You are exactly where you need to be.” (Image by Rui Molar.)

9. Looks like more rain for the next 24-48 hours as Tropical Storm Andrea makes her way northeast up the coast.

10. Getting a little bored with my gluten-free diet (yes, I’m still at it), so I’m looking forward to giving this recipe a try over the weekend.

Just a few links from around the web that caught my eye this week. How about you? Find anything interesting online recently? Share a cool link in the comments!
