As you know, New Jersey is the diner capital of the world.  Stephen, Shaine and I saw proof of this on our way home from the Reel Big Fish/Streetlight Manifesto show at Ramapo last night.  While we were driving down 17 back to the Parkway, Stephen was drooling out the window at all the shiny, lit-up diners along the side of the highway.  He recalled the lyrics that Jamie and I wrote a few years ago when the Princess Maria Diner was built and requested that I post them on my LJ for everyone to enjoy.  So, here they are.

They Have Built Us A Diner
(to the tune of “I Will Buy You A New Life” by Everclear)

Here is the menu that will show you
Yeah, what you can eat in here
Come in and sit down
So we can eat again

Finally there’s a place we can go to
To hang out every night of the year
The first one in this town
We have never had the joy of a shiny restaurant

I know we will always look back

We couldn’t wait for it’s arrival
Yeah, and they didn’t know why
We go in and we go sit down
Inside our favorite booth

Yeah, I guess it’s doing okay
Our waiter is the strangest guy
Can you belive he actually thinks
That the diner used to fly?

They have built us a diner
But it isn’t brand new
They have built us a diner
Big and shiny and blue
I will take you there sometime
And you can pay our bill
I will take you there sometime
Yes I will

I know all about that other one
That boring place that was never fun
I don’t what we did before
We spent all of our time there

They might make you think you’re happy
Yeah, maybe for a minute or two
But it’s not the real thing
No, it’s not unless it’s shiny and blue

They have built us a diner
But it isn’t brand new
They have built us a diner
Big and shiny and blue
We’ll have gravy fries sometime
And you can pay our bill
We’ll have gravy fries sometime
Yeah, they have built us a diner

I know we will always look back

Can you please go with me tonight?
Can you please go with me tonight?
Yes I will

They have built us a diner
But it isn’t brand new
They have built us a diner
Perfect, shiny and blue
They have built us a diner

They have built us a diner
I will go there, won’t you?
They have built us a diner
Perfect, shiny and blue
They have built us a diner

They have built us a diner
They have built us a diner

Mmm.  Makes me want cheese-and-gravy fries and a pizza burger.

Great. You have me completely hankering for chicken fingers and ff w/gravy and mozz cheese, and Altantis’s Cream of Broccoli and Cream of Tomato w/Rice soup. ::sigh:: I’m homesick. Definitely homesick… if you get really bored, why don’t you come down not this weekend but next. I have a nice apartment you can crash at, and Steve and Phil are in the area… 🙂 Goodtimes.

aww, thanks! that sounds like it would be so much fun — i have so many friends living around there, too, so i really need to come down sometime. but, i just got this new job (waitressing, again, which sucks), so i’ll probably be working all weekend, hopefully making some damn money. are you coming home this summer? perhaps we will have to hit up the diner(s) sometime if you do. =)
